COVID Ready Uni for MBBS - Foreign Education

The current pandemic has left us all in unprecedented and unforeseen circumstances. As a student who is about to start university come fall of 2020, the future seems uncertain and precarious with the constantly looming threat of COVID-19. These times demand change, not just for individuals, but also for institutions such as universities across the world. Across the world, there are people seeking higher education for degrees such as MBBS and colleges have to prepare themselves to make sure students seeking this sort of education have the opportunity. As a student choosing to study in the medical domain, there are several questions that may be looming, such as:

    • Should I plan to go abroad for MBBS this year?
    • Should I take a break year on my path to pursue a MBBS degree:
    • Universities of which country ensure safety measures to ensure I complete my MBBS with minimum risk?

There are indeed a lot of consequences that the havoc of the pandemic has created in the medical domain. With a degree such as MBBS, which demands practical knowledge and practice along with theoretical knowledge and ground-work, these questions are bound to rise. Certain countries with top-notch universities have taken quite a few measures in universities that offer the MBBS degree. Below are top 5 countries where pursuing a MBBS degree has, with a look at recent data, been proven safe:

  1. Ukraine: The Ukrainian government has offered full safety for the welfare of medical students at university during these times. Up until now, the syllabus of the university has been covered by online classes. Universities now offer on campus classes and the latest date to reach Ukraine is the 31st October. First year students should get their results by the 1st week of October and hence still avail a chance to start further education in Ukraine.
  2. China: While ironic, China is now deemed safe for medical students wanting to pursue a MBBS degree. Cases across the country have seen a surprisingly sharp decline. Additionally, almost all Chinese universities have proposed that they will offer a full year of online classes for international students to ensure safety and well-being. This, along with the falling number of cases, makes sense as a popular choice for Indians wanting to pursue a medical degree.
  3. Kyrgyzstan: Already a popular choice for Indian students, the fact that cases in Kyrgyzstan have been decreasing, makes the situation better than what students would endure in India. The government has provided extensive help for international students arriving in the country such as quarantine accommodation, fresh food and regular supply of sanitisers. Universities are also offering online classes to accommodate for the current COVID situation.
  4. Kazakhstan: Kazakhstan has also been under keen surveillance and declining numbers suggest safe enough measures for Indian students. The majority of medical universities in Kazakhstan are ready to offer online classes, deeming it a suitable choice for all international students.
  5. Philippines: Philipian Universities have already given their consent for international students to complete their BS course (which needs to be passed before an MBBS degree is earnt) in their home countries, via online classes.

Hence, first year students need not worry about travelling to the Philippines as there is an availability of completing the BS degree from their home country.

These countries listed above have good enough opportunities for any individual wanting to pursue an MBBS degree abroad. There are options for the student to continue taking online classes as well as attend in person classes with the sharp decline of cases in all of these countries. Situations in these countries definitely seem better than it is in India, with us reaching new highs for the number of cases with each passing day. It hence may seem like a prudent choice to start pursuing a medical career in these countries given the current scenario in these countries and in India.
