Doctors as Radio and TV Personalities

Doctors as Radio and TV Personalities

Doctors have a profound role to play in the functioning of society and the field of health care. Doctors ensure that overall health and wellness is maintained and are responsible for educating the masses about the same.
Even outside the clinic, Doctors have a vital role as radio and TV personalities, which aids them in spreading the knowledge about proper health and treatment of illness.

Understanding the responsibilities of the job

A Doctors main job is to save and heal those who need medical attention. This means all those who are injured; both physically and mentally.

More often than not, people try to administer self-treatment assuming that the issue at hand is a small and manageable one.  This often leads to greater health issues that take longer time to heal and more money to treat. By acting as a radio or/ and TV professional, a doctor can reach a wider demographic of people. He or she can let people know about common and rampant issues that may affect a person and also let people know the accurate and correct administration process of first aid. . Speaking on the radio as a medical professional does not necessarily mean that one should talk about illness. He/she can talk about inculcating simple practices and lifestyle changes that help improve the overall quality of life.

As a Doctor who is in a position to influence a large number of people, he has the responsibility to talk about the importance of maintaining daily hygiene..

Spreading awareness about the prevalent illnesses due to change of season or weather and the preventive measures fall under the duty and  responsibilities of a doctor as a radio or TV personality.

A simple radio broadcast helps connect the Doctor to the masses. This helps in spreading the word of health quicker to a broader spectrum of people. It is essential to talk about the problems that the common people face or may face on a regular basis.

Training and Skills a Doctor as a Radio or TV Personality Should Possess

Not all doctors can be a radio or TV celebrity. It takes a certain amount of training and understanding to be able to find the right voice and empathic tone that people can connect to immediately. Doctors, in general, are accustomed to the daily rush of patients with innumerable and different problems that require unique diagnosis.. Each case is different from the other.

On air, it is a completely different scenario. The doctor is not in direct contact with a person or a group. He or she is required to talk and discuss a topic or topics in a general and simple manner that can be understood by all the people who are watching. To achieve this, doctors acting as radio or TV hosts/ guest should have a certain skill set that will enable them to to get the attention of the people.

  • Public speaking: It goes without saying; when addressing a wide range of people over the radio or TV, one must possess a certain degree of public speaking ability. The doctor must be able to understand that he or she is not just addressing one or two individuals rather a whole demographic. So it is important to keep the topic simple yet powerful enough to leave a lasting impression.
  • Friendly tone: No one likes to hear a monotonous speech about viruses and antibiotics on the radio. People are more interested in listening to a topic when it is presented in a fun and friendly manner. So in order to be a successful as a radio talk show host/guest, one must be able to deal with even serious topics in an easy manner. Maybe by quoting some real life examples ending with a positive note. This will help in attracting and maintaining the attention of the viewer for long periods; enough for one to make their point.
  • Addressing the gravity of serious topics: Despite the friendly tone approach discussed above, one must also have an understanding of the solemnity and gravity of certain situations. Making jest of everything can lead the listeners and/or viewers not pay heed the words and advice with seriousness. When addressing a topic that has serious repercussions, it is important to know to when to speak firmly and make people understand what may or may not be a threat to their life.
  • Active practice: This is more of a technicality rather than a skill. A doctor who is a radio or TV personality should have a credible background and be known for his or her accomplishments and proficiency as an active doctor on call whether it be in the ER, ICU or as a general family physician.

Some Radio/ TV Doctor personalities.
