The Philippines gained its independence in 1948 after being colonised first by Spain (for 300 years) and then by the United States (for 50 years).

It is a mountainous country located close to the equator with rich and diverse geography. The major languages spoken here are Filipino and English and the major religion is Christianity.

Culture and Life in the Philippines

The Philippines has often been referred to as the melting pot of the eastern and western cultures due to the assimilation of cultural practices and beliefs of the indigenous people as well as of the people who came to the country in the later years including the Spaniards and the Americans. The major religions in this country (Christianity and Islam) along with the demographics have played a huge role in leaving its imprint on the culture of this country leading to the creation of the unique Filipino identity.

The traditions of this place have been influenced by the Austronesian inhabitants of the islands. The main festivals, or fiestas, of the country, are a representation of the cultural diversity present in these islands. Since Christianity (mostly Roman Catholic faith) is the main religion here, most cities and towns have patron saints who are honored through these fiestas like the Slimugi festival (held in honor of  Saint Sebastian), the Sinulog festival  (held in honor of Santo Nino De Cebu) and the Kuraldal festival (held in honor of Saint Lucy).

Accommodation and Cost of Living

In terms of living expenses, the Philippines have much to offer for those seeking a low cost living in a comfortable but exotic locale. Rent and utilities can be extremely cheap in the country with Manila and Cebu city being among the more expensive options.

Food is also not very expensive if you cook on your own and stick to Filipino brands and local fruits and vegetables. The restaurants are also not overly expensive and you can choose to eat out at basic range restaurants regularly as well. The cities have decent healthcare facilities in terms of hospitals and trained medical personnel although the same is not true for the smaller cities and rural areas. Basic living expenses are also not very steep and public transportation is widely available and light on the pocket.

Conclusion

Choosing the Philippines for pursuing medical studies helps you get access to quality education with greater emphasis on practical training at a reasonable cost. Moreover you have the option of coming back to India or seek opportunities overseas.
