NEET UG Preparation for Biology

NEET UG Preparation for Biology

BIOLOGY

Biology is considered relatively easier than the other two subjects for NEET UG exam. The exam paper includes 45 questions each from Botany and Zoology with a total of 90 questions. Maximum questions are asked from NCERT, so students should spend more time on that instead of on reference books.

Topics to Prepare

This is the favorite section of the medical aspirants. It is divided into two major parts:

  1. i) Zoology
  2. ii) Botany

Most of the candidates prepare sincerely for this section as all candidates are medical aspirants. It is essential  for them to know the topic-wise weight age percentage.

Method of Preparation

  • To achieve a good hold over Biology for NEET UG, candidates should keep studying the course every day.
  • Make sure that you are studying with the help of NCERT books. Go through the diagrams of NCERT as many questions are based on diagrams.
  • Solve all the examples provided in NCERT textbooks.
  • Prepare yourself to answer tricky questions.
  • Know the weightage of all chapters and prepare accordingly. Invest more time in important chapters.
  • The topics with high weightage are Cell Biology, Molecular Basis of Inheritance, Plant Physiology, Ecology, Biomolecules, Biotechnology, and Human Physiology.
  • The somewhat confusing topics are Plantae and Animalia. Class levels up to chordate and Phylum non-chordata require consistent revision and practice.
  • Highlight the important points in your notebooks so that it becomes easier to focus while you revise.

Paper Analysis – BIOLOGY

From the previous ten years’ question papers it is noticed that a large number of questions are asked from Principles of Inheritance and Variation. Molecular basis of Inheritance and Morphology of Flowering Plant is also considered in the list of important chapters for NEET. Few other topics include Human Health and Diseases, Cell and Animal Kingdom.

It is advised to candidates to read in-depth explanation of basic concepts from various reference books. Practicing online mock tests will help the candidate prepare for these topics. The graph mentioned below gives a better picture of the total number of questions asked over a period of 10 years.

Percentage Distribution of Questions

Candidates are questioned from chapters and topics studied in classes XI and XII. After analyzing the weightage of questions from classes XI and XII, it has emerged that questions from class XI have more weightage than class XII chapters. Therefore, class XI CBSE syllabus must be the candidates’ priority while preparing for Biology.

The exam also includes High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions from various important topics of class XI. The graphs given below display the percentage-wise distribution of questions asked from classes XI and XII:

Principles of Inheritance and Variation

It is one of the most important topics of class XII syllabus. The weightage of questions from this chapter has decreased over the years. However, the level of difficulty has increased, making it an important chapter. There are various questions from genetic disorders (chromosomal and Mendel), mutation, monohybrid and di-hybrid cross, dominance, alleles, linkage and recombination, sex determination, and pedigree analysis. The following graph shows the number of questions from this topic in the last ten years:
