Top 10 Medical Colleges in the World for MBBS

The Top 10 Medical Schools in the World

Medicine is a preferred academic choice for many students. However, it is a highly competitive field of study with an abundance of applicants every year. While prospective students from India have several choices at their disposal, ambitious applicants can apply for medical programs to the finest universities around the world. Let’s take a look at the top ten medical colleges today. Please note that the universities are not in order of ranking.

University College London (UCL)

UCL is one of the most prestigious universities in London. It is famous for medical breakthroughs such as the discovery of the immune system and the identification of adrenaline.

By studying at UCL, you will be located in Central London and will have access to many clinics and hospitals, which is required in a medical program.

UCL’s MBBS program is a six-year course and each year focuses on several integrated modules.

Some of UCL’s notable alumni include Hugh Owen Thomas, Josephine Barnes, and Ben Goldacre.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Located in Cambridge, MIT is famous not only for medicine, but also for many other academic courses. You will be very close to Boston if you are studying at MIT.

MIT does not have a medical school of its own. It runs a joint program with Harvard Medical School. The M.D.-Ph.D. is a popular course, and it is one of the best in the world. There is also a Health Sciences and Technology program here, which is another joint venture between Harvard and MIT. This program brings both the universities together, along with the hospitals of Boston, for a unique collaboration to integrate medicine, science, and engineering to solve human health problems.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is among the top ten medical schools of the world. It is named after David Geffen, the business magnate who donated $200 million to the school.

David Geffen School of Medicine was ranked as the seventh best medical school in 2018 under the QS World University Rankings. This medical school is an integral part of UCLA, and the medical students engage and collaborate with other student groups of the same university.

UCLA is located in sunny Los Angeles, and medical students will have an opportunity to engage with a diverse population and be a part of a melting pot of different cultures.

Yale University

Established in 1810, the Yale School of Medicine is responsible for many medical innovations like the first X-ray conducted in the US, the first use of chemotherapy, and the first successful use of penicillin in the country.

The Yale School of Medicine uses its own characteristic system of education in which there is no grading or ranking. Exams are anonymous, and teaching is conducted through conferences, seminars, and tutorials. You are encouraged to self-evaluate your work and develop it within your field of research.

Johns Hopkins University

In 1893, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine was established. This medical school is located in Baltimore.

Johns Hopkins University is considered to be a world leader for education and research in public health and medicine. It has a nursing school, medical school, and the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Stanford University

Stanford University’s School of Medicine has a very low acceptance rate and very few gifted individuals are admitted into its prestigious program each year. It is located between San Francisco and San Jose and both cities present a plethora of sights and sounds to explore. The campus of the university is huge with more than 600 student groups.

The university’s M.D. program offers a research-intensive course to prepare physicians to play their part in improving world health in the future.

University of Oxford

One of the oldest functional universities in England, Oxford is also one of the best in the world for many disciplines. The medical course lasts for six years. You will have to study pre-clinical medicine in the first three years to complete a BA degree in Medical Science. At the end of the sixth year, you will gain a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (BM, BCh) qualification.

The course places emphasis on scientific reasoning and methodology. Students are taught via lectures, practical laboratory work, seminars, tutorials, and computer-assisted learning.

University of Cambridge

The Cambridge Biomedical campus is one of the largest of its kind in the continent, and it is a peerless center for biomedical research, medical education, and clinical practice.

You can opt for both graduate and standard medical courses in Cambridge. The standard course is six years long; in this duration, the first three years comprise a taught program. The remaining three years focus on implementation and the application of acquired knowledge.

Imperial College London

The Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine is among the best in the world. As a public research university, it was established in 1907. The acceptance rate is quite high, and this college finds a place in the list of the top ten medical colleges every year.

Harvard University

Another jewel in Boston’s crown is Harvard University. It is located in the Longwood Medical Area, a thriving medical community. It is home to many hospitals and clinics.

This university’s MD program includes two curriculums–Health Sciences, and Technology—in collaboration with MIT and Pathways. Academic societies enhance faculty and student interactions via peer evaluation, close-knit learning groups, and personal growth.

These are the top ten medical schools around the world. Start preparing for a program in these elite institutions well in advance and with adequate study and practice, you may secure a seat.
