The score secured in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) forms the basic requirement to get admission to medical colleges in India. The top institutions that offer MBBS course in India include All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), King George’s Medical University, to name a few.

The total course duration of MBBS in India is five and a half years. The students will get in-depth knowledge about the anatomy of the human body, surgical procedures, human cytology, medicine formulation, pharmaceutical drugs, and its effects, during the first four and a half years, and the final year is dedicated to gaining practical experience. The student can work in the government or private sector as a doctor after successful completion of the course.

Why is MBBS the best Career Option?

Medical studies as a career option are acknowledged and appreciated through several generations. It is one of the oldest professions known to us. It cannot be defined as just another career option, but a noble service to humanity. The merits of choosing MBBS are:

  • A lucrative career – Medical industry is one among the highest paid fields in India. The national average salary of an MBBS doctor in India is ₹9,02,800 currently. Doctors with a Post Graduate specialization can expect better salaries. The earnings can be furthermore increased by acquiring higher degrees in super specialty subjects.
  • Diverse opportunities – The obvious choice after MBBS is to start as a doctor. One can work with a government or private hospital or venture into private practice. If anyone wants to choose an alternative career path after MBBS, various opportunities can be explored. Sports medicine, health research/journalism, hospital management, medical academics, policy-making in public health are just a few avenues whether a medical graduate can find a job.
  • Job security – Job security is yet another reason why most talented students want to become a doctor. The doctor-patient ratio in India stands at less than 1 for every 1000 population, and the country needs more medical professionals. India needs 4,97,189 more doctors to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Comparison with Other Career Options

Engineering and MBBS are the most sought-after professional courses in India. With the advent of information technology, engineering graduates are able to find high-paying jobs and enjoy an established career earlier than medical graduates. Other career fields like sales and marketing, accountancy, law, and such, also provide good pay, and provide a career earlier as compared to the medical profession.

On the other hand, earning a degree in MBBS is tough. It requires countless hours of study and tremendous effort. And it takes more years for an MBBS professional to gain fame and reputation in the field. However, it’s worth the effort when the benefits of a career in medicine are considered. In terms of respect earned in society and the flexibility of the job, doctors are clear winners. There is no retirement age for private practice as a doctor.
